The Steel Draftsman creates precise 2D and 3D drawings and fabrication details for structural- and plate-steel projects using SolidWorks. Working closely with engineers, project managers, and the shop floor, the Draftsman ensures that every component is accurately modeled, dimensioned, and documented for seamless fabrication and assembly.

Key Responsibilities

• Produce detailed 3D models & 2D drawings in SolidWorks for structural members, plate work, weldments, sheet-metal parts, assemblies, and erection layouts.
• Generate comprehensive fabrication packages: bills of materials (BOMs), cut lists, DXF files for CNC plasma/laser, welding symbols, and erection drawings.
• Interpret engineering calculations, structural design sketches, and client specifications, translating them into manufacturable shop drawings.
• Apply relevant codes and standards (e.g., AISC, AWS D1.1) and company drafting guidelines to all deliverables.
• Check and revise drawings for accuracy, fit-up, tolerances, and clash detection; coordinate approvals with engineers and clients.
• Collaborate daily with project managers, purchasing, and shop supervisors to clarify design intent, resolve issues, and support lean fabrication workflows.
• Maintain drawing revision control and digital file management within PDM/vault systems.
• Assist in developing drafting templates, macros, and best practices to improve department efficiency.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of hands-on SolidWorks drafting/modeling in a steel fabrication, manufacturing, or mechanical design environment.
• Strong knowledge of structural steel shapes, plate-steel detailing, welding symbols, and fabrication processes (cutting, bending, machining, assembly).
• Ability to read and interpret structural/architectural drawings, schematics, and specifications.
• Proficiency with MS Office; experience with PDM/PLM or ERP systems for BOM integration.
• Detail-oriented with excellent spatial visualization and problem-solving skills.
• Effective written and verbal communication; able to convey technical information clearly to non-drafting personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience drafting for industrial buildings, mezzanines, conveyors, chutes, or heavy equipment frames.
• Familiarity with Tekla Structures, AutoCAD, or Advance Steel.
• Knowledge of steel erection sequencing and field-fit issues.
• Working understanding of GD&T and tolerance stack-ups.
