Job Description

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving law enforcement duties at a state agency, institution or facility. This will include conducting patrols in an assigned area or location to enforce laws and rules and provide protection for individuals and property within the assigned area of responsibility.

Compensation: $38072.00

Typical Functions

  • Patrols an assigned area or location to eliminate hazards, vandalism or other criminal activity; provides protection for individuals and property within the area of responsibility; may carry firearms and be required to use force to enforce security, apprehend suspects, or protect lives.

  • Directs traffic in an assigned area and controls traffic entering and leaving parking areas; enforces parking and traffic laws and regulations; issues citations or makes arrests as appropriate.

  • Directs police, fire and other emergency vehicles; provides assistance to authorities in the handling or investigation of traffic accidents, fires, vandalism, and other emergency situations and incidents.

  • Greets visitors; answers inquiries; receives and relays messages concerning both business and personal matters.

  • Provides supervision or direction to an assigned staff; prepares and maintains necessary records and reports.

  • Plans and directs law enforcement programs; coordinates law enforcement activities within assigned areas of responsibility.

Level Descriptor

This is the career level of this job family where employees will be assigned responsibilities for performing a full range of law enforcement duties and will perform highly independent work in patrolling an assigned area and enforcing appropriate laws, rules and regulations to protect and safeguard lives and property within the area. Some responsibilities may also be assigned for providing training and assistance to others in performing these duties.

Education and Experience

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of six months of experience in security or law enforcement work or direct care of juveniles in a secure residential facility.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of routine police and security practices; of state and federal laws related to public safety and criminal conduct; of traffic control; of methods and techniques used in conducting investigations; of emergency response procedures; and of first aid techniques. Ability is required to follow oral and written instructions; to give clear and concise directions; to make oral and written reports; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to effectively evaluate emergency situations; and to react quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
