Job Summary and Objectives: The Fleet Maintenance Technician provides hands‑on and administrative support to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the company’s mixed fleet, including gasoline vehicles, diesel vehicles, and heavy equipment with hydraulic systems. This role blends maintenance coordination, equipment inspections, light mechanical and hydraulic service tasks, and documentation support to help minimize downtime and maintain fleet readiness.
Essential Job Function
- Support the scheduling and tracking of preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs across fleet vehicles and equipment.
- Monitor vehicle and equipment condition through routine inspections, service intervals, and operator feedback.
- Assist drivers and equipment operators by receiving, documenting, and escalating maintenance concerns.
- Coordinate with internal maintenance staff and external vendors to prepare equipment for service and verify completed work.
- Track basic downtime information and assist in prioritizing maintenance needs to support operations.
Light Mechanical & Hydraulic Support Duties
- Perform basic, non‑invasive maintenance and inspection tasks, including:
- Checking and topping off fluids (engine oil, coolant, DEF, transmission, brake, washer, and hydraulic fluids).
- Conducting visual inspections of tires, batteries, belts, hoses, brakes, and exhaust components.
- Inspecting hydraulic lines, fittings, cylinders, and reservoirs for leaks, wear, or damage.
- Replace minor service items such as filters, light bulbs, wiper blades, fuses, and similar components.
- Assist with lubrication and greasing of vehicles and heavy equipment per maintenance schedules.
- Perform basic troubleshooting and visual diagnostics to identify issues requiring mechanic or vendor repair.
- Prepare vehicles and equipment for inspections, shop service, or vendor repairs.
- Conduct post‑service inspections and basic operational checks or test drives to confirm readiness.
Documentation, Compliance & Reporting
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspections, service documentation, and work orders.
- Assist with DOT, safety, and regulatory compliance documentation as applicable to fleet and equipment types.
- Support tracking of basic maintenance costs, parts usage, and service trends.
- Identify recurring maintenance or operational issues and communicate observations to leadership.
- Provide status updates on fleet readiness and maintenance activity as requested.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Competency
- 1–3 years of experience in operations, maintenance support, equipment operation, logistics, or a related role.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and comfort performing light maintenance and inspection tasks.
- Familiarity with company fleet vehicles, equipment, or jobsite operations (preferred)
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Effective communication skills with drivers, operators, vendors, and supervisors.
- Basic computer proficiency (email, Excel, maintenance or fleet tracking systems).
- Ability to follow safety procedures and maintenance standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting mixed fleets (gasoline, diesel, and heavy equipment).
- Exposure to hydraulic systems through inspection or basic service support.
- Familiarity with DOT‑regulated vehicles or safety compliance requirements.
- Vocational or technical coursework related to automotive, diesel, or equipment maintenance.
- Experience working with fleet management or CMMS software.
- Proficient in computer software applications, such as Microsoft Office.
Certifications/License Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Physical & Requirements
- Ability to lift, up to 50 lbs
- Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, climb ladders, and work safely around vehicles and heavy equipment.
Mental Requirements
- Ability to determine a reasonable path to resolution for issues concerning gas or diesel vehicles as well as heavy equipment.
Work Environment
- Exposure to outdoor environments, fleet yards, and maintenance shop conditions.
- Ability to work in varied weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain).
- Occasional after‑hours or emergency availability may be required.
Other duties may be assigned at the discretion of management based on the needs of the business.
