Position Overview
The Plant Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all equipment associated with an aggregate pit or portable plant, as well as performing routine maintenance and repairs on equipment.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
- Properly follow all company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment.
- Monitor and maintain the plant machinery to ensure efficient and safe operations including daily inspections, equipment cleaning and repairs as needed.
- Monitor production throughput and output to maintain optimum efficiency and maximize production levels.
- Perform quality control testing to ensure products meet specifications.
- Complete required documentation related to safety, production, and maintenance.
- Monitor material quality, log changes in product or plant performance, and promptly report any quality concerns to the Lead-person or Superintendent.
- Assist with plant maintenance including screen changes, conveyor belt repair/adjustment, line changes, cutting, grinding, and welding.
- Operate heavy equipment when needed to maintain stockpiles and load trucks.
- Maintain housekeeping standards for the plant, control room, equipment, and site.
- Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience
- High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
- Two years of aggregate industry experience preferred.
Work Requirements
- Must be 18 years in age or older.
- Must pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in policy and procedure handbooks and manuals.
- Regular, on-time and consistent attendance is required and must be willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays when necessary.
- Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required (less than 25% of the time) and be willing to travel to other locations within the workday.
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
- Able to work in or around water. Position may require taking a boat to dredge and being out on the water.
- Ability to read, write and do basic mathematical calculations to keep time and material records.
- Ability to communicate, understand and follow verbal and written instructions and policies.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Ability to effectively direct others in the workplace.
- Basic knowledge in electricity and mechanics.
- Ability to operate various types of heavy equipment that may include but not limited to a front-end loader, skid loader, car/truck, backhoe, and crushing equipment.
- Ability to utilize a tablet for time keeping, training and other items.
- Demonstrate a hands-on, collaborative approach; work well in a team.
- Ability to cope well in stressful environments and communicate professionally.
- Demonstrated ability to take guidance and direction from a supervisor.
- Ability to work independently without constant supervision.
Physical Requirements

- The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and use hands to hold, grasp and turn, as well as handle equipment and/or tools.
- The employee is occasionally required to sit, balance, reach, crawl, kneel, crouch, bend, push, pull and climb stairs, ladders, inclined walkways and access elevated platforms.
- Able to regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
- Must be able to communicate with others verbally and in writing as well as utilize a computer, phone or tablet.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. A variety of noise levels, adverse weather conditions, and complex job sites are to be expected daily. Proper clothing, PPE (personal protective equipment) is required, and safety precautions should be taken to ensure your safety, and the safety of others in all conditions.
